Terre Alte – English Language

The Association “Terre Alte” (High Lands) was founded in 2005. Its aim is to promote an area rich in remarkable naturalistic and cultural places, which is still unknown to mass tourism.

On the silent ridges of these hill, you can discover botanic jewels – such as the gorgeous blooming of the wild orchids – ancient hamlets built up in sandstone, scenic paths once travelled by merchants and smugglers.

This is a world rich in history and culture: from the castles to the Romanesque churches frescoes, to the literary places described by the novelists Beppe Fenoglio and Cesare Pavese, who were born in this area. Besides, you can enjoy a spectacular landscape, strolling through these hilltops, where the scent of the nearby Ligurian sea blows in the wind.

Proposals

For any information or clarification about the proposals on the calendar (hikes, guided tours, events): Tel. + 39 333. 466.33.88 – E-mail: info@terrealte.cn.it.

Hikes

“Terre Alte” organises thematic hikes to discover the most evocative places of Alta Langa every weekend form April to October and in the public holidays. A tourist or naturalist guide and specialists of the area are always present during the excursions.

The hikes last about seven hours (from 10 am to 5 pm), packed lunch is needed, and their length is detailed for every hike (it varies from 10 to 15 kilometres).

It is needed a minimum of training, suitable outfit, comfortable and non-slip shoes. In case of bad weather, we vary the itinerary in order to use the umbrella or to avoid muddy paths.

Guided tours

We organise thematic guided tours of literary or architectural nature (Castles, Romanesque churches, frescoes), travelling from a village to the other by bus. A tourist guide is always present. The meals can be consumed in the accommodation facilities of the area, whose prices are always stated in the plan. These tours are open to all, no need for training or suitable outfit.

Events

We can organise hot-ait balloon flights above Langhe, rides on horse-drawn carriages, overnight truffling, trips to the Ligurian sea with a mule carrying your backpacks, at the instance of small groups of enthusiasts. You can even celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday in a farmstead or a Renaissance castle at your disposal. We can define together these unique and engaging experiences.

Organised groups

If you are a cultural association, a group of friends, a large family, we can organise our proposals only for you. Please, contact us with adequate notice in order to plan your day in Langhe.

Instructions for use

Timetables

Group hikes, with a tourist guide and specialists of the area always present. Beginning: 10 am / end: 5 pm (approximately). The starting place and the timetable are always clearly stated in the programme. We advise you to be in time. We often stop for accounts about the area, readings or visiting monuments along the way.

Meals

You should provide with your own packed lunch and water-bottle… and a backpack. We preferably make the lunch break outdoors (except in case of rain!), in a sunny place, in a wood or on the field near a little church. We choose parking areas only if they are nice and panoramic. We strongly suggest you to buy the local products in the shops of the villages we start from. In this case, you should arrive at the meeting place some minutes earlier.

Outfit

Comfortable clothing, suitable for country hiking and sitting on the grass. Hiking boots are suggested; otherwise trainers with non-slip soles. We walk mostly on dirt roads, often on steep stretches, inevitably on paved roads in the vicinity of the villages.

Tastings

We often take a break along the way, to visit commercial farms where you can have free tastings – such as a glass of wine. When we call at significant commercial farms or homemade products shops at the end of the hike, tastings or servings are with fee. You pay the bill to the owner.

We can suggest you a stop at a very good pastry shop, then it’s up to you to decide whether to taste the hazelnut cake or to eat an ice-cream (hazelnut ice-cream!). Similarly, in a wine shop, you are free to taste only a glass of Barbaresco or to try the wines of all the producers… in alphabetical order.

Tastings and snacks are not compulsory. We occasionally specify their prices in the programme.

Forms

You need to subscribe the annual membership card in order to take part in the hikes and events of our association. The guide will give a form to be filled in at the stating place. You will pay the fee to the guide at the end of the hike. We always specify whether our offer will be with fee or free.
